Sooner or later, almost every horse has to contend with joint problems. An acute injury or a chronic condition leads to degeneration (breakdown) of the cartilage, remodelling of the surrounding bone and inflammation with pain in the joint. This inflammation leads to overproduction of joint fluid of lesser quality, resulting in reduced shock absorption. Horse arthritis is a vicious circle in which cartilage damage leads to more inflammation and in which this inflammatory reaction of the body leads to even more cartilage damage. Many conventional medical treatments are therefore aimed at stopping this vicious circle of inflammation and further cartilage damage.
